Mandarin Gate is a cornerstone in the Seattle community and has been recognized for its outstanding Chinese cuisine, excellent service and friendly staff. The restaurant is known for its modern interp…
The fried chicken was delicious and insanely tender! Never had better chicken. And for such a good price too! In addition, the sweet & sour sauce for the s&s chicken was sent separately, so the chicken stayed nice and crisp- that was very thoughtful! I will be ordering again!

Wanted to try a new Chinese restaurant and this one caught my eye. The portions are small for the price, but the quality was very good. I asked them to make the fried rice spicy, even though it wasn't an option, and they nailed it. I'll definitely be ordering from them again.

The Individual Dinner is a good value, I feel I got a good amount of food and a bigger bowl of soup than expected, so we're starting off great!
The Hunan Chicken...the individual ingredients were there, broccoli and carrots and celery and chicken. I could visibly see spices, including two chilis (yum!). The rice was exactly what I ordered and seemed fine.
It's just...nothing tasted good. It was all meh. Spicy, but bland? Carrots and celery are cheap aromatics and good crunchy veggies yet they were few and far between, it was basically ninety percent spiced broccoli and giant chunks of chicken. Which, frankly, sounds amazing, but something was really missing in that flavor.
If I compared this to Safeway's takeout, honestly, I'd have to flip a coin. Safeway's Chinese American food is extremely mediocre, but it does have flavor.
Mandarin Gate has better starting base ingredients and actual peppers to spice things up, but just doesn't taste very good.
The cooking techniques seem fine, the chicken could maybe be cut smaller but honestly everything technical seemed fine. Everything was cooked well and combined well and there was a good amount of sauce vs chicken and veggies. I don't think this is a chef issue, I think this is a recipe issue.
Alternately, perhaps an important ingredient was not available tonight? Salt? Vinegar? Shaoxing wine? Hunan Chicken usually has ginger and garlic and I didn't taste either. I mostly tasted red pepper flakes, chili oil, and broccoli. Which works if you add salt, so the best I can guess is a soy sauce issue. That...sounds pretty unlikely.
Mandarin Gate, you're doing a lot right already but fix your flavors and you could be first out of the starting gate. Either that or rebrand as health food or something.

The food is okay, not great, just okay. I love almond fried chicken but they really need to work on this dish. The crust on the chicken is dry and not very good tasting, the chicken piece are way too big for the amount of crust but again the crust us sub par. Chopstick in Edmonds has incredible crust on their almond fried chicken, I suggest you go buy their AFC and revamp yours.

The food is great, delivery was speedy, and the service was unparalleled. Would recommend the General Tao's chicken as it was cooked to perfection.
Will be ordering from Mandarin Gate again.
