As a German, reviewing German food abroad is basically my civic duty and I do not take this responsibility lightly.
Biersal actually surprised me in a very good way. The currywurst? Not exactly like back home, but super flavorful, like a slightly rebellious cousin who moved to California and got interesting. I approved.
The pretzel, though… finally. After many disappointing attempts across the US, I can say: this is the best one I’ve had here so far. I was genuinely excited. Possibly too excited. There may have been emotional attachment. The Obatzda? Also a win, very solid, very satisfying.
Then came the sausage plate. The knackwurst was dangerously close to a proper rote Wurst. For a brief moment, I forgot I was in San Diego and not standing at some random street stand in Germany. 10/10 nostalgia moment.
Now, because my passport requires it, I must complain: the potato salad. The potatoes were a bit undercooked, and the coarse mustard dressing didn’t quite do it for me. Not bad, but let’s just say my Oma would have opinions.
Overall though: I’m impressed, I’m happy, and I will absolutely order again. Mostly for the pretzel. Definitely for the pretzel.

The Chicken Schnitzel was burnt, but if cooked correctly would have been good. The Sub Bockwurst was mildly flavorful. Might give them another chance but $17 for a burnt breaded cutlet was disappointing.
