Larry and Jack Mitchell wanted to manufacture the best ice cream in San Francisco. They opened their ice cream shop in 1953.
Mitchell's has been a beloved San Francisco institution for more than 69 …
One of the containers had melted all over the place; it was a cascade of chocolate! I think our driver made at least one too many stops! The ice cream was delicious, but like all else, not much goodies in in the ice cream! What was in there was wonderful - just not enough! Like I said, it's par for the course these days. Also, they need to get MUCH better containers to hand pack their ice cream into, as they seemed flimsy to me! Now, a good thing; I passed by the 4.5 rated ice cream and gelato stores because they offered only 1 kind of chocolate choice. Swenson's though, had several, and THAT'S the way it should be!! For chocolate enthusiasts, one choice is just too measly, and just not right! So, I was tickled to see their variety! I definitely recommend, as it's great ice cream!!

There's nothing like Mitchell's!!! And grasshopper has got to be one of the best flavors in creation! Unbelievable!!! The half-gallons are amazing for parties or dessert for a crowd (but I've also bought them just for three of us in the house. SUCH value for the money!! I was so hoping they'd have a half gallon of Chocolate Indulgence (or peanut butter indulgence)--the most insanely deep, rich chocolate ice cream w peanut butter chunks and swirls...but alas, not today. There simply is no other ice cream place for me, bc nothing can compare to the actual cream Mitchell's uses and their total brilliance with flavors. The store is often crazy busy, so I'm super grateful I can have it delivered to my front door!

It's not exactly a secret, Mitchell's grasshopper pie is a triumph and has become almost as iconic of a SF dessert as the Its-It. I won't even hesitate to pay the higher online price for delivery. No point beating a dead horse, it's amazing, buy it.
My last order I decided to purchase a particular item once to test it out: Coop's salted caramel. I knew the price would never be justifiable because I personally have extensive experience making large batch caramel. I know how profitable caramel is. It's a half dozen extremely basic household ingredients heated up and cooled down, so when I see a 10 oz. container for $16, I just giggle to myself and think "ok, dude". It was.....obviously not worth the price, don't kid yourself. They could bring the price down a few bucks per container if they got rid of the silly rubber top. Yes its cute, but completely unnecessary and just wasteful at the end of the day.

5 STARS! Mitchell's is the best ice cream store in San Francisco. My family and I have been buying 1/2 gallons from this business since the 1980's. It has always been consistently good and the consistency has always been amazing. Their selection of flavors are mouthwatering. Their packaging has always been to the rim and packed tight. The ice cream has always tasted fresh and decadent. Generations will pass and Mitchell's will always be "The" place to buy ice cream over and over again. From my parents to my family now to my son - Mitchell's ice cream will always be the go to place!
