A very unique Ma Po Tofu and I really want to put empasis on that unique because I do not think it was necessarily bad, just very unorthodox and not what I was expecting; not spicy at all, the broth tastes more like a lighter broth and is much thinner rather than the heavy mapo tofu I'm used to and it's fully vegan; this dish usually uses pork to flavor the broth.
Is it bad? Honestly no, as someone who loves mapo tofu it's pretty yummy! Sure it wasn't what I was necessarily expecting but it wasn't a disappointing dinner; it's worth trying if you've been curious about ma po tofu but can't handle spice!
The ultimate question is "will I order it again" and honestly, no, but that's only because I really love the spicy, pork-flavored mapo tofu; nothing against this version, just not for me!

I absolutely love The Republic, it's super tasty, fresh and hot, and they are consistent with portioning. Spare ribs are my favorite as well as fried shrimp, the real stuff not the frozen shrimp but the crispy breaded kind which makes all the difference and the best in town hands down. You will love it here!

Vegetable Foo Young generous serving. Fluffy, gravy was well seasoned, not salty, silky texture. Perfect comfort food. Crab Puffs over cooked and hardly any filling. Sweet and sour sauce was tangy and delicious, complex taste profile, not just syrupy sweet

The chicken with green beans and black bean sauce was amazing. So glad I got it!
The egg rolls were huge, but over-fried, creating a bit of a crusty mess. I think I would have liked them in a more traditional sized portion.

The combination plates are wonderful
The shrimp, however, which used to be the most popular dish, is inedible. I don't know where they get their shrimp, but it is nasty. Other than that this place is wonderful.
